Sherlock Holmes is, make no mistake about it, a Guy Ritchie film from the first moments. But, it’s a Guy Ritchie film about one of the most iconic characters ever and in my opinion, a right fun rolicking flick. The film suffers from an anemic plot, but sparkling performances from Rachael McAdams as Irene Adler and Robert Downey Jr. as the inimitable Sherlock Holmes lift it up by its very bootstraps. Mark Strong & Eddie Marsan are excellent supporting characters as Lord Blackwood and Inspector Lastrade respectively and add to the rich tapestry as it unfolds on the screen. Only Jude Law (Dr. Watson) suffers from a bout of under-developed acting. One does have to get past the memories of the overly stiff performance of Basil Rathbone as Holmes and embrace the Robert Downey Jr./Guy Ritchie interpretation which, to my mind, is more true to the incredibly smart, but slovenly, cocaine-addicted character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The environment created for the movie is a beautiful CGI-rendered London in its late industrial phase complete with a suitable coat of grime & soot.
The beautiful attention to Holme’s home and the laboratory of the bad guys finishes off the look with a steampunk aesthetic – which is currently very popular. In short, I can highly recommend the movie to anyone with a desire to indulge in a bit of escapism, of which I’m sure Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would approve.

We here at Pubguys were sitting around the virtual Pub and decided that we need to be more vocal. I know what you are thinking… stop it. This will be more in the form of written word. In the form of more postings so you can get your Pubguys fix in between recorded sessions. So, as we often do here at Pubguys we jump right in without giving it much, if any, thought and I decided to go first. (Stop thinking that too.)
We are in the midst of the College Football bowl season and have been provided with some rather shocking coaching news. Urban Meyer of Florida decided he was calling it quits… for a few days. Now he is just “taking a leave of absence”. What the hell does that mean? He is not only leaving the University of Florida in limbo, he is leaving the kids that play for him in limbo. Don’t look now but National Signing Day is just around the corner and all those blue chips are trying to decide what to put down in the blank that says “School”. So if you are that kid with delusions of Tebow running through your head, what do you do? If I were that kid I think I would be calling up Bama, Texas, TCU, somebody other than Florida.
But wait there is more… Those boys in Lubbock, err I should say, that boy in Lubbock didn’t want Meyer getting all the pub this holiday season. Mike Leach, a topic of much discussion at the Pubguys, is at it again. He has been accused by a player of basically what amounts to imprisonment. And it’s not just any player, it is Adam James, son of College Football guru extraordinaire and ESPN analyst Craig James. As we speak, Leach is seeking an injunction in court to allow him to coach in the Alamo Bowl. But given the past antics of the Dread Pirate Leach, Texas Tech may have had enough and he may be fired prior to receiving that $800k bonus that is due on the 31st. I can easily say that he will (at least his quotes) be missed. Looks like it wasn’t the “Fat Little Girlfriends” that were the ones inconvenienced after all.
Happy New Year and Happy Bowl Season!
