Can You Enjoy a Defeat?

Stupid question? Maybe. However, last night’s BCS National Championship defeat for the Longhorns is being met by the fandom (at least those who I know) with great pride. The fact is, the Longhorns star QB, the obvious single point of failure in the offense, was injured and out of the game very early in the 1st quarter. His replacement, a freshman QB who has no meaningful experience in a college game (I consider mop-up duty against a hack opponent as not meaningful). While the early parts of his performance were as you would expect from such a young and inexperienced player, he eventually showed himself quite well, enough to bring the team back with a chance to take the lead with 3 minutes left in the game. So while the Horns lost the game (which after Colt went out, I will say that I gave them very little chance to win), what better way to get your fandom behind the next QB to take over for a player who owns many (if not all) Longhorn passing record. So, back to my question…can you enjoy a defeat? Perhaps not, but this might be the closest you can get. – PGB

I personally believe that any fan that cannot enjoy a loss, when the team plays with heart and pride, should not consider him/herself a true fan.
I did not watch the game last night, but I have read many a report this morning and as you can imagine it has been the subject of most conversations this morning. Overwhelmingly, the result has been, “those ‘Horns played hard last night, the Tide just had the necessary experience to win.” I think you ‘Horns fans should be very proud of young Gilbert and look foward to the next few years.

The simple answer is yes. As I tweeted last night I am VERY proud of the way the Longhorns played. To think that they had a chance to win the game late with a 19 year old kid that this time last year was wondering if his girl would put out after the prom. Not trying to take anything away from Bama, they won and should be congratulated, but I think things would have been VERY different had McCoy been in the game. Texas looked very good and IMHO would have won the game.

Can you enjoy a defeat? Perhaps as a fan, we can ‘enjoy’ a loss such as the one the Horns were handed last night. But, as a former athlete, I can tell you that those boys are not enjoying the defeat. PGT is absolutely right – the game would have been very different if McCoy had not been injured. I don’t think I have ever felt so sorry for anyone… As an athlete – you lost. Second place. No one remembers second place. You lost. You’re a loser. BUT… it only adds to the adreneline and desire to come back again and kick some ass. (just the opinion of someone who has finished second.)
