Today, Elvis Presley would have celebrated his 75th birthday. What would the music landscape look like if Elvis had remained an active part? We will never know; instead, we just have our memories.
Elvis was not a big player in my formative years, but he was a huge part of my Mother’s life, and I grew up with a healthy dose of respect for the man, his music and his accomplishments because of her. I was not, by any stretch, a fan of his movies at the time, but I reckon between my Mom’s influence & my grandmother’s insistence, I’ve seen just about all of them by now. Much the same can be said of the music of his Gospel years. Although I appreciated his rock & roll/blues songs as a kid, it wasn’t until I became an adult that his Gospel ways actually spoke to me in tones my heart understood despite the fact that every trip to my Grandmother’s house resulted in an Elvis listen-a-thon. I never did understand the devotion that was heaped upon him by the screaming masses, but I do remember being somewhat sad the day he died – the day my Mother cried. So, with a kind nod to my Mum, and a great big wink to that leather-wearing, lip-curling, hip-gyrating, music-pioneering man known as Elvis, I give you – in no particular order – my 10 favourite Elvis songs.
- Don’t Be Cruel
- All Shook Up
- Can’t Help Falling In Love
- Love Me Tender
- Suspicion
- Promised Land
- Are You Lonesome Tonight?
- Jailhouse Rock
- Surrender
- Viva Las Vegas

What, no Blue Christmas or Crying in the Chapel?
Stacy and I went to Chuy’s for lunch; I had The #2: Elvis Presley Memorial Combo – excellent!
Absolutely, never on Blue Christmas Never!.
Crying in the Chapel… meh. I think that one is easily skipped in my brain, because my Grandmother & Mother used to sing that song all the time. I think I just burned out on it. But, I can certainly understand why it would be in someone else’s top-10 list.
and, personally, I’m delighted to see Chuy’s in Texas. We used to eat at them all the time in California.

Different Chuy’s I think; the ones here started in Austin and haven’t made it to California yet. There is one in Arlington – be sure and try the creamy jalapeno ranch with your chips!
I love Blue Christmas; went to a fireworks show at Christmas one year where the pyrotechnics were synchronized to the music, and when Blue Christmas came on there was a huge blue explosion every time Elvis sang the word “blue.” Quite memorable, and been a favorite song ever since.
You may be right, but the Chuy’s we went in to in Arlington sure reminded me of the California stores. Both in decor & food style.

So do you know how I figured out this wasn’t a post from PGT? 1) The use of the word “Mum”..2) The fact that “The Eyes of Texas” wasn’t on the list! Yes…as I recall, he did do a rendition of that song..and it was quite good if memory serves

Well, crud. I guess I forgot to sign it. I’ll go do that now.
If I had ever heard Elvis do Eyes of Texas, it might make that list; but, I haven’t so it didn’t.

As I recall, he breaks into the Eyes in the middle of The Yellow Rose of Texas in one of his movies, but not sure which one. I think PGT has a recording of it.
Nice work Kyle!
