I am almost thankful for the distraction as the World Cup kicked off just moments ago. But as I keep one eye on Mexico/RSA I keep the other on the newswires awaiting the “official” announcement that Nebraska will join the Big 10. Once that happens there will be a flurry of official and unofficial information hitting the press regarding the rest of the Big 12 (10).

The latest has Texas talking with the Big 10 and possibly joining hands and skipping in together with none other than Notre Dame. The Big East has issued an ultimatum to Notre Dame (bad move Big East) and told them that either you are all the way in or you are all the way out. Notre Dame will be all the way out.

This would leave the Big 10 as the new Big 14 and possibly Big 16 if Texas A&M and Oklahoma joins up. But those two schools are rumored to be in talks with the SEC. Could it be possible that Texas is separated from its two biggest rivals? Unlikely, this is all probably just bluffs meant to keep the negotiations alive and for these teams to get what they want when they do land.

That leaves the most likely scenario, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State join Colorado and move west to the Pac 10 (16). Which would leave Notre Dame to the Big 10 (11/12) and most likely 4 teams to be named later to become the Big 16.

Stupid question?  Maybe.  However, last night’s BCS National Championship defeat for the Longhorns is being met by the fandom (at least those who I know) with great pride.  The fact is, the Longhorns star QB, the obvious single point of failure in the offense, was injured and out of the game very early in the 1st quarter.  His replacement, a freshman QB who has no meaningful experience in a college game (I consider mop-up duty against a hack opponent as not meaningful).  While the early parts of his performance were as you would expect from such a young and inexperienced player, he eventually showed himself quite well, enough to bring the team back with a chance to take the lead with 3 minutes left in the game.  So while the Horns lost the game (which after Colt went out, I will say that I gave them very little chance to win), what better way to get your fandom behind the next QB to take over for a player who owns many (if not all) Longhorn passing record.  So, back to my question…can you enjoy a defeat?  Perhaps not, but this might be the closest you can get. – PGB
